When will I need to complete identity verification?

We ask all our customers to complete the identity verification. You can complete the verification on the same day when you created an account or later after that whenever you’re ready. However, please note that you’ll not be able to deposit, buy, or trade without completing the account verification.

Why am I being asked to go through this identity verification process?

We ask all our users to pass the identity verification to ensure that our customers are who they say they are. Verification is a part of globally accepted KYC standards, a multistep process that helps to prevent the creation and use of fraudulent accounts.

Know-your-customer, or KYC, is a practice for companies that offer financial services and is an important layer to prevent money laundering activities and eliminate bad actors. By verifying your account you help us to provide a safe environment for all CEX.IO customers and the crypto industry.

How long does verification take?

Identity verification applications are processed automatically. If everything is submitted correctly, you’ll be notified within 5 minutes about a successful verification.

The most common reasons for verification delay

The most common reason for identity verification delay is wrongly submitted documents or images. Applications that don’t meet the requirements may be rejected or may need to be reviewed manually.

What happens if I don’t complete the verification process?

If you don’t pass the identity verification, your account activity will be limited. Unverified users can only review the CEX.IO website pages, but they can not buy crypto, make deposits, trade, or do any other activity on their accounts.

How is my ID and selfie information used and stored?

We implement enhanced security measures to protect your personal information from loss, misuse, unauthorized alteration, or destruction. No one but only authorized and trained personnel of CEX.IO have access to your account information. All communication between CEX.IO and a customer is encrypted, meaning that no third parties can interrupt the connection and access the information you submit during account verification. You can read more about it in our Privacy Policy.

How do I find the verification page?

The account verification should be done using the CEX.IO App.

If you’re a newly registered customer, you’ll see a pop-up screen inviting you to pass the verification when you log in to your account.

If you want to check your completed verification stages, you can go to the Profile menu in the upper left and open the Verification tab.

Also, you can check the status of your account verification on the Profile page when using the CEX.IO website. However, you’ll not be able to submit the verification application there.

Can I get verified through the CEX.IO website?

Currently, the verification process is unavailable on the CEX.IO website. You can visit our website's Profile page -> Verification tab to check what verification stages you need to complete.

However, to actually complete the verification by uploading documents and taking pictures, you'll need to download the CEX.IO app.

What devices support the CEX.IO App?

You can install the CEX.IO on any iOS or Android mobile device, be it a smartphone or tablet. The CEX.IO App currently requires an Android of 7.0 version and up and an iOS of 15.2 or later.

Can I use my friend’s/relative’s device to pass verification?

You can only use personal devices to use the CEX.IO App. This is a security requirement for all our customers. If you log in to your account using a device that doesn’t belong to you, that means you grant access to your account, personal information, and funds to a third party (friend or a relative). In this hypothetical situation, we can not guarantee the safety of your funds and personal data.

What documents are required for identity verification?

As a global company, we need internationally recognized documents to verify customers' identity. The list of documents that we accept includes and is limited to:

  • An international passport

  • A government-issued national ID card

  • A driver’s license

Please note that the document requirements may vary depending on your country of residence.

Your document must be in English or have Latin characters. It also needs to be current and not expired.

We don’t accept any other document types, like bank statements, or birth certificates for identity verification.

If you try to upload a document that's not on our list, expired, or doesn't have Latin characters, we won't be able to verify it. This means you might have limited access to our platform’s services.

Do I need to specify the country of current location or the country of citizenship?

During the identity verification, we only ask you to specify the country of residence. This is necessary to ensure that we provide you with crypto services in compliance with your local regulations.

If you're a citizen of one country but live in another, tell us the country where you currently live.

If you're just visiting another country, you don't need to specify that. Choose the country where you live.

What if my country doesn’t support ZIP codes?

If your country doesn’t support ZIP code, you can enter six zeros (000000).

Our system carefully checks all the information you provide when verifying your identity. If your country uses ZIP codes, make sure to enter the correct one. If you don't, it might lead to rejected verification.

Can I provide the name of the city/province and street in the native language if it’s not English?

Please fill in these fields using the Latin/English transliteration. When filled in other languages, the information cannot be processed by our system and compliance officers, which may cause verification delays.

Can I use CEX.IO if I’m officially unemployed?

Yes, you can use CEX.IO services. There's no specific requirement that you have a job. However, it's essential to make sure you have enough money to cover your daily expenses and any unexpected costs that can happen because of the high market volatility.

Do I need to provide proof of income during identity verification?

We don’t ask for proof of income during the identity verification. Customers need to answer some general questions about the source of their funds, but no documents are required for this step. In some cases, our compliance department may request extra documents to verify the source of funds. This is a separate process and is usually handled through personal communication with the customer.

Do I need to verify my phone number?

During the verification process, you’ll only need to provide your phone number. We’ll not send you confirmation codes to verify it on this step. If you want to connect a phone number to your CEX.IO account, you can add it on the Security tab and enable 2FA codes with the Text message method.

Can I use someone else’s phone number?

Due to security reasons, customers are not allowed to use phone numbers or devices that do not belong to them. If hypothetically you use someone else's phone number, you’ll grant access to your account data and funds.

What is a facial recognition check?

A facial recognition check is a security measure that uses technology to identify you based on your face. It's like a digital fingerprint. During the facial recognition on CEX.IO, a camera takes a picture of your face and will later compare it to the pictures of your ID.

Can I use the back camera for facial recognition?

Currently, facial recognition can only be done with the front camera of your smartphone or tablet.

What if I don’t have any of the supported documents?

CEX.IO accepts different types of identity documents that are supported in almost every country, including national ID cards, international passports, and driver's licenses. These are trusted documents that help confirm who you are. Currently, we can only verify identities using these specific documents.

Do I need my documents to be issued in English?

CEX.IO doesn’t require your identity documents to be issued in English. However, all the necessary fields must have Latin Transliteration.

Latin transliteration is a common standard used in international identification documents like international passports and driver's licenses. It’s widely recognized and understood by people from different countries, making it easier for our users to fill out forms and for our system and compliance officers to check and verify the information. Using Latin Transliteration also allows us to comply with local regulations in different countries.

What if I don’t have documents with Latin transliteration?

If your documents aren't in Latin transliteration, we won't be able to accept them. You might consider getting a new document like an international passport from your government. Then, you can try verifying your identity again.

Can I use a notary-approved translation of my documents?

CEX.IO only accepts photos of document originals. Currently, we don’t accept documents translated by government agencies or approved by a notary public. If you currently don’t have a Latin translation in your identity document, consider getting one, like international passport, and verifying your account later.

Can I use scan-copies PDFs of my documents?

You can only upload photos of your documents original. Scan copies or photos of scanned copies are not allowed.

Can I upload photos from my phone gallery instead of taking snapshots?

Currently, you can only use your phone camera when taking photos of identity documents. Uploading photos as files from your device gallery is not supported.

Can I skip uploading the back side of my documents?

Some document types have important information on the front and back sides, that’s why we require you to take photos of both sides. If all of the information is provided on the front side, we’ll not ask you to upload additional photos. However, if a photo of the back side is required for your document type you must provide it.

Information from my documents was scanned with mistakes. How do I fix them?

To edit the scanned information, just tap the field with mistakes and provide the correct data.

I received an immediate rejection of identity verification. How do I proceed?

The most common reasons for immediate rejection of identity verification are unsupported types of documents, documents without Latin transliteration, expired documents, and blurred or unreadable photos.

If one of these reasons describes your situation, you can resubmit the application and provide the correct documents and photos of better quality.

How do I update/reset my identity verification information?

Sometimes you may need to update your identity information, after changing your name, when moving to live in another country, or when your identity document has expired. To provide the updated information and upload your new documents, use the Resubmit button in the upper right corner on the Verification page in the CEX.IO App (Profile->Verification->Resubmit).
