Two-factor authentication, or 2FA, is an extra layer of security that helps keep your account and funds secure. When 2FA is enabled, you are required to enter a one-time password to log into your account. This extra layer of security prevents anyone except you from accessing your account and funds.

2FA is a security measure that protects users from security leaks. By default, the first factor used to authenticate a person’s identity is a username and password. 2FA works like another line of defense against hackers, phishers, and bad actors by requiring another piece of information after using the right username and password. The second factor can include something you know (security questions), something you have (a temporary pin number texted to your phone), or something you are (biometric devices).

We at CEX.IO are working diligently to ensure that all accounts are protected. For this reason, we recommend all of our users implement 2FA into their CEX.IO account. Please note that 2FA is mandatory when making withdrawals with your CEX.IO account.

You can enable 2FA on your CEX.IO account by using your phone number or a special authenticator app (iOS, Android). You can choose one of the two methods to activate 2FA. But we recommend enabling both phone and authenticator methods at the same time to make your account even more secure. When both 2FA methods are enabled simultaneously, you can choose which method you would like to use to authenticate your login.

How to enable 2FA using the Authenticator App on your CEX.IO account via the CEX.IO App.

1. Open the CEX.IO mobile app. Log in to your account and tap the profile icon in the upper left.

2. Scroll down the page and select the Two-Factor Authentication option.

3. Install the Google Authenticator app if you haven't already.

For iOS Devices: Open the App Store on your iOS device > Search for "Google Authenticator > Tap "Get" to download and install the app.

For Android Devices: Open the Google Play Store on your Android device > Search for "Google Authenticator" > Tap "Install" to download and install the app.

4. Save the provided secret code in a secure location. You may click

sign to copy the code. This code can be used to access your account if you lose access to your Google Authenticator.

5. Open Google Authenticator, and you will see a 6-digit code for your CEX.IO account. Enter this code in the designated field

6. Now your account is protected with the Authenticator 2FA method.

Note: On the mobile app, 2FA can only be enabled using Authenticator Apps like Google Authenticator. The second option to enable 2FA via text message is available only on the web version. If you want to enable both Google Authenticator and Text message for 2FA, please follow the steps outlined below using the web version.

How to enable 2FA using the Authenticator App on your CEX.IO account via the website

1. Go to the CEX.IO website and log in to your account using your email and password.

2. Once logged in, click on your account profile icon and select the "Security" tab from the dropdown menu.

3. In the Security settings, look for the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) section and click on the "Enable" button opposite to the Authenticator App option

4. Read the security warning and click Continue.

5. The confirmation code will be sent to the email address linked to your CEX.IO account. Check your email for the code, enter it into the corresponding field, and click Next. After a QR code will be displayed on the screen.

6. The QR code will be displayed on the screen together with the Authenticator Secret Code, save this code securely, this code is crucial in case you lose access to the Google Authenticator app.

Use your phone’s camera to scan the QR code and click Next.

7. After scanning, Google Authenticator will display a 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. Enter this code into the "2FA code" field and click Enable.

8. 2FA should now be enabled on your account.

Note: If you want to enable 2FA via the second "Text message" method on your CEX.IO account, please follow the steps outlined below.

To enable the "Text message" method is possible only via the web version.

You can select either of the two methods to activate 2FA. However, we recommend enabling both the text message and authenticator methods simultaneously to further secure your account.

How to enable 2FA via the second "Text message" method on your CEX.IO account via the website

This type of 2FA provides a code via text messages. You should have a valid phone number to activate this option.

To enable 2FA via the text message option, repeat the same steps:

1. Go to the CEX.IO website, log in to your account using your email and password, and enter the 2FA code from your Google Authenticator.

2. Once logged in, click on your account profile icon and select the "Security" tab from the dropdown menu.

3. In the Security settings, look for the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) section and click on the "Enable" button opposite to the Text message option

4. Read the security warning and click Continue.

5. The confirmation code will be sent to the email address linked to your CEX.IO account. Check your email for the code, enter it into the corresponding field, then enter the 2FA code from your Google Authenticator and click Next.

Pay attention to the time displayed for entering the code from the text message and the valid code from Google Authenticator, which changes every 30 seconds.

6. Choose your country, enter your phone number, and click Next. A verification code will be sent to your phone number via SMS.

7. Enter the code from the SMS message into the "Verification code" field and click Next.

8. The second method 2FA via the Text message is enabled on your account.

After enabling the desired methods, ensure both are working by logging out and attempting to log back in.

This process allows you to have an additional layer of security with the flexibility of using either Google Authenticator or Text Message for two-factor authentication.

However, we recommend using both text messages and the authenticator app to enhance your account's security.

Note: when both methods are enabled on your account, 2FA via Google Authenticator will be requested automatically when you sign in. If you want to sign in using the text message method, click on "Sign in with another method" and select the "Text message" option.
