Orphaned blocks are mined blocks, which are not a part of the main block chain, hence there will be no payment for them. They can emerge if 2 pools mine blocks at the same time. Or if there is an attacker who is trying to reverse block transactions.

The reward for orphaned block goes to the pool which mined the next sequential block.
